Project Goal: Learn how to use creative coding to create self generating patterns.

Tool: p5js

Background: This project began with curiosity about the complexity of patterns in nature. I wanted to use my skills as a designer to further explore the new ways in which what we have learned from nature can be expressed visually. I decided to use the medium of generative design because it allows for visual preciseness, a higher quantity of variables that can be created with ease and is a new medium I became interested in as design starts to incorporate more movement.

Process: My process included research of different patterns in nature, how they worked, and the mathematical equations behinds them. Then after using sources to understand how the coding behind these processes worked I built these generative designs in a creative coding source.

Takeaway: Overall, this project is reflective of my initial interests in bringing natural patterns to life, while also learning about generative design, creative coding and new ways to bring motion into work, which is a skill I hope to bring into my future projects.

Project Goal: Create a one-minute-long exhibition trailer for the artist Ellen Gallagher, focusing on typography in motion.

Tool: After Effects

Background: For this project, I spent a lot of time researching what Ellen Gallagher’s artistic inspirations and processes were like. I found that her work mainly revolves around taking old prints and reconfiguring them, through layering to create new meaning.

Process: To reflect a similar process in her exhibition video, I decided to base the motion on organic forms, which move and morph to eventually create new shapes. I also incorporated the motion of peeling back layers, to connect to her method of constantly building upon pieces.

Takeaway: Overall, I believe this video fits Ellen Gallagher's aesthetic for renewal and change perfectly. In this project, I challenged myself to learn and implement difficult typography motions and to string them together into a cohesive and visually stimulating video.
